I just got my most recent draft of my young adult novel back from my agent. It has been sitting on my coffee table staring at me for days.
For some reason I feel compelled to answer the question, Is editing a novel harder than writing one? I don’t know why I care, but right now I feel like editing, definitely editing is harder.
If you go into a section to expand it, let’s say the flashbacks, that section can become disproportionately large and then you have to adjust every other section. Right now I’m afraid that I may have added so much detail to the past, that my narrative isn’t pounding through the present as hard as it should. These are the things that keep me up at night.
All in all, I only spent about two days staring at the thing and procrastinating, so that’s not so bad. Now, I’m knee deep in the work and better go check in on my characters.
That would be easier to do if the sun wasn’t shining in Seattle!
