The Next Big Thing

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop is a chance for authors around the world to tell you what they’re working on. The author answers 10 questions about their next book, and tags the person who first tagged them, plus at least 5 other authors.
Marjorie Manwaring , author of the poetry book, Search for a Velvet-Lined Cape, who I met during a residency at The Whitely Center on San Juan Island tagged me to participate in The Next Big Thing. TNBT features answers by authors who have books coming out this year and materialize on the web every Wednesday. Check out my answers below and then visit the author I’ve tagged next week:
What is the working title of the book?
The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door
Where did the idea come from for the book?
A state of grace. I was just walking through the airport and the narrator’s voice started speaking to me. I sat down and opened my laptop.
What genre does your book fall under?
Young Adult Fiction.
What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
Knowing these answers are impossible because kids grow up fast and movies take a while to be made:
Celia: Chloe Grace Moretz (Dark Shadows)
Drake:Logan Lerman (Perks of Being a Wallflower)
What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?

Ninth grade outcast Celia Door has no friends at Hershey High School until Drake moves to town.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
Oh man, let’s call it four years of evenings and weekends (much of it while working full-time at a food co-op).
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
To me this is a book about a relationship and how one special friendship can change the course of your life. I was inspired by one of my high-shool besties, Warren.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
The book is about bullying. It’s about finding love that isn’t necessarily romantic love. It’s about being cynical and how kids become that way. But, perhaps most enticing, it is about chocolate.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
My publisher is Viking Children’s Books.
My tagged writer for next Wednesday is:
Anis Mojgani has a new book of poems coming out in March! Read all about it.
